With all of the natural beauty in and around our lodge, it’s no surprise that backcountry skiing is one of the major attractions for our guests during the winter season.

Not only is it a great way to experience the mountains on a close and personal level, but there is terrain and slopes appropriate for virtually any skill level.

While many people have stepped off a ski lift to head down a hill at a busy resort, it’s an entirely different kind of sensation when you’re doing it in a pristine mountain wilderness surrounded by fresh air, towering firs, and panoramic views at every turn. Just ensure that you pack appropriately for the weather. Making that jump to backcountry skiing is really not that large of a leap and doing it under the guidance of our team at the lodge takes any intimidation you might have away.

Adding to the joy of backcountry skiing is that you can have a great workout without feeling like you did something just to stay fit. Once the exhilaration wears off, our guests often say that they enjoy better sleep, a healthier appetite, and a satisfied calm after a day skiing down the mountain.

Still not convinced? Here are a few things our guests remark on after a day of skiing:

The beauty of the surrounding trails. Picturesque beauty makes almost any outdoor activity better, and backcountry skiing is no exception. If you would rather cruise through one of the most beautiful places on Earth, instead of seeing snapshots, this is an experience you have to try for yourself. The scenery you catch from trails and slopes around Yoho is simply too good to be missed.

The unique sense of adventure. With trails that are right for people new to the sport and challenging terrain for those who have already found the joys of backcountry skiing O’Hara has something for everyone. Chat with us and our Guides and we will put you at ease as you move through the powder snow that carpets the area. Once you feel the wind rushing through your hair, you’ll realize how special the experience really is.

Our experienced guides and instructors. If you want to become a better backcountry skier, or start out with some great tips and advice, our experienced guides can help. We can find that secret stash of snow or that perfect route for every skill level, and can make sure you feel safe and well taken care of. Guiding is part of the experience so join us!

The benefits of exercise and fresh mountain air. Anyone who has ever exercised outdoors in the crisp mountain air can tell you that it does something wonderful for your mind and your body. If you want to feel more rested, relaxed, and energized all at once, a quick “workout” on our access road on your cross-country skis might be the perfect answer. We have a new Bombardier Tracksetter and groomer this year so the access road should have a perfect corduroy like never before.

Returning to mountain luxury when you’re done. Of course, half the fun of backcountry skiing in the British Columbia wilderness is enjoying the accommodations afterward. From fine BC wines to treats like a wood-fired sauna and goose-down comforters, we have everything you need to relax after your outing. If you’re going to ski in style, why not enjoy the very best in comfort afterward, too?

To us, there isn’t any better way to spend a crisp winter day than backcountry skiing in the area around Yoho National Park. Try it for yourself and see what makes it so special.
